About

Rapes in war is one of the major issues of sexual violence. Sexual atrocities were repeatedly committed during the recent civil wars in Libya and Congo. Raping women is even treated as a weapon to attack the morale of the enemy. Another typical case is the sex slaves in WWII. It is still an international issue that creates tense relationship between Japanese government and the other countries. Besides the conflict between countries, it can also be a case to study the misconception of various cultural stereotypes, traditional gender roles and misunderstanding about the nature of sexual violence which still has impact on today’s society. This art work tried to engage audience to discuss the human right aspect of this issue and tried to explore if empathy can be developed in a war situation.

Through creating situations for the students and the audience, role playing, making art works with historical materials, exhibitions and interacting with the audience, the artist Phoebe Man tried to develop a sense of empathy through creative practices and connect the historical event with daily life. In the workshop, participants were asked if s/he were a Japanese soldier who is in power on another woman, a comfort women who wants to express her views on misconception and a spectator who witnesses a comfort women is excluded from her family, what will s/he do? The workshops were held in Hong Kong and Taiwan. The art works of the participants were shown in the exhibition “Art as Social Interaction — Hong Kong/Taiwan Exchange”. To further emphasizes the sense of empathy, the Taipei exhibition added installations of masks and comics background; there were full time docents to introduce and discuss the issue with the audience. More in-depth discussions on the issue could be happened in the exhibition. As a result, people obviously become more sensitive to what the victims were experiencing.
